When Is the Best Time

From afternoon onwards is the best light for the waterfall and tour buses already left the park. In the morning the waterfall is in shade. The flow of the waterfall is best after heavy rainfall.

Crowds:
The Fitz Roy Falls are close to the B73 and a two hours' drive only from Sydney. The falls lookouts are easily accessible with a short walk. More crowded in summer and at weekends. In the afternoon most of the tour buses already left the National Park. This is the best time of the day to enjoy bush walking and the falls.

Weather:
More rainfall from November to February with the peak in Nov. and Feb. In summer day temperatures are often around 25 degrees and higher. Nights are pretty cool. Winter months are drier and sunnier and frost is not common. Nevertheless, spring, summer, and autumn are great seasons for hiking. The Visitor Center is open daily except for Christmas from 9 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.

The Fitz Roy Falls are within Morton National Park. The popular waterfall is 81 meters high. It is a short stroll to the first lookout at the top of the waterfall. If you walk further more on the west rim trail it gets less busy and the views to the waterfall are even better. You get the best view almost at the end at Starkeys Lookout. The trail is 3,5 km long and not a circular trail. The other option for hiking is the east rim trail almost 7 km return. This trail is less busy and offers great views as well.

Morton National Park is hikers’ paradise. This part of the park is crowded. If you stay in Milton, you get into the not well-known part of remote wilderness hiking. Depending on your knowledge of the park you should do it guided.

The Visitor Center provides you with all information you need not only for Morton. At midday, it was too crowded but in the afternoon the staff was very helpful with many information for our vacation.

Coins are needed for parking fee; currently 4 AUD
