When Is the Best Time

Nestled in the majestic Totes Gebirge range of northwestern Austria, just above the town of Altaussee, the Loser Panorama Klettersteig is a thrilling Via Ferrata route designed for seasoned adventurers and lovers of alpine drama. With a difficulty rating of D, this ferrata demands more than curiosity—it asks for strength, grit, and a touch of climbing finesse.

Getting There

To begin your journey, drive up the scenic toll road that winds toward the Loser panoramic parking lot. A fee is required, but the stunning views and access make it well worth it. From the lot, it’s a 30-minute hike to the base of the ferrata, offering a gentle warm-up before the vertical challenges ahead.

Climbing the Ferrata

This route is not for beginners—you’ll need strong hands, a steady mindset, and some experience with exposed alpine terrain. The climb itself takes about one hour, weaving along metal ladders, cable-secured edges, and rocky spires. The adrenaline is real, but so is the reward: panoramic views of the Ausseerland region that stretch across sparkling lakes and jagged mountain silhouettes.

For those who prefer to keep both feet firmly planted, a walking path begins from the same location and leads to the summit without climbing gear. It’s ideal for family members who want to enjoy the landscape without scaling the cliff.

When to Go

The summer months—particularly June through September—are the best time to tackle the Loser Panorama Klettersteig. Snow has melted, the sky is reliably clear, and the route is dry enough for safe climbing. Just be prepared for crowds, especially during peak holiday weeks.

Avoid climbing in wet conditions—the rock can become dangerously slick, and even the fixed hardware is best handled when dry. For quieter experiences, try going early in the morning or on weekdays. You’ll likely have the route (and the views) all to yourself.
