About Me

I’m Micha — travel photographer, hiking enthusiast, and creator of Best Time 2 Travel. I live close to the Alps and Neuschwanstein Castle, a perfect base for exploring mountains, lakes, and remote landscapes around the world.

I infected my husband Markus with the travel bug years ago, and he joins me on most adventures — from steep alpine trails to rainforest hikes in Australia and the volcanic valleys of Hawaii.

My passion is travel and photography. I take most of the photos in my guides; a few are captured by Markus, my best friends, or my brother René. A good photo can reveal more than a thousand words — especially when you’re searching for hidden gems like Yellow Rock or navigating the poorly marked trail to The Wave in Arizona. (Yes, we won the famous Wave permit in September 2023.)

I’ve learned from professional photographer Chris Engel, a close friend of mine. His lessons helped me refine my technique, but passion and the story behind the image matter just as much. Before turning travel into my full‑time work, I studied economics and worked at the headquarters of a major fashion company.

Being outdoors, enjoying good food, and carrying my camera — that’s all I need. My camera is always with me to capture the moments that make a place truly special. My other passion is music, which accompanies me on every journey.

Today, I focus on high‑quality photos and short videos. A one‑minute clip can show you far more than text alone — helping you decide whether a place is right for your next trip.

Why I Need Your Support

If you enjoy my guides, please support me by subscribing to my YouTube Channel. With AI‑generated content flooding the internet, it’s becoming harder for travelers to find honest, experience‑based advice — and harder for independent creators to stay visible. I rely on affiliate links, and I will soon disable ads on my website to keep the reading experience clean.

Search engines have changed. Much of our content is used without credit or compensation — a phenomenon known as Google Zero. While other search engines still work, Google’s dominance has made it challenging for independent travel writers. But I continue creating detailed, real‑world travel guides because I believe authentic travel knowledge still matters.

It was a hard climb for me in the Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon.

Instead of seeing challenges as setbacks, I took them as opportunities to build something new. Positive feedback and sharing my work on social media mean the world to me — they keep this project alive and motivate me to continue creating honest, experience‑based travel guides.

On Best Time 2 Travel, you’ll mainly find hidden gems, remote hikes, and off‑the‑beaten‑path destinations — from the sandstone wonders of Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument to extraordinary experiences like Land Diving in Pentecost or watching puffins on Lunga Island .

My former website and travel tag, "When to be Where".

I founded whentobewhere.com in 2015 with the vision of sharing the most magical places and the perfect time to experience them. I was one of the first travel creators to focus on the “best time to visit” concept — a foundation that led to more than a million annual visitors.

But life sometimes takes unexpected turns. When my first project ended, I chose not to give up. Instead, I built something new — with the incredible support of my husband Markus, my brother René, and my friends, especially Rik and Paul. Their encouragement made it possible to launch my second project in January 2021 and to navigate challenges like Google Zero, which changed how search engines treat independent creators.

My goal today is simple: to provide genuine, people‑first travel content based on real experience.

Unlike many AI‑generated websites that publish generic text without ever visiting the places they describe, I only recommend destinations I’ve personally explored. And sometimes, that means advising against a trip — like Adam's Peak in Sri Lanka, which I don’t recommend due to overcrowding and poor conditions.

Portugal feels like a second home to me. Many of my relatives live near Lisbon, and we visit them every year. This connection has inspired me to include numerous destinations from mainland Portugal, as well as the breathtaking islands of Madeira and the Azores, including hidden beaches that most travelers never find.

Starting over from scratch after running a successful travel brand was not easy. To keep Best Time 2 Travel running, I rely on affiliate partnerships, which allow me to earn a small commission and continue offering this website free of charge.

These are my main affiliate partners — booking through them supports my work. Thank you.

A catamaran boat on River Targus
Definitely one of my favourite tours on Targus River in my second hometown town, Lisbon.

One of my absolute favourite experiences in my second hometown, Lisbon, is this catamaran tour on the Targus River. It’s the perfect way to enjoy the city from the water — passing landmarks like Belém Tower, the 25 de Abril Bridge, and the Discoveries Monument.

By clicking the picture above, you’ll be taken directly to GetYourGuide, my trusted affiliate partner. They offer excellent customer service and one of the best free‑cancellation policies at no extra cost. If you book through this link, you support my work and help keep Best Time 2 Travel running.

The Pragser Wildsee Hotel has the best location and an excellent chef.

The historic Pragser Wildsee Hotel has the best location you can imagine — right on the shores of Lago di Braies — and an excellent chef. Waking up here means stepping outside directly into one of the most iconic landscapes in the Dolomites.

Picture Theft & Image Protection

I’m using a larger logo on my photos now because hundreds of my images have been taken and used commercially without permission or credit. For six years, I avoided watermarks to keep the user experience clean — but protecting my work has become essential.
